It was clear that the four tricks needed to defeat the contract bad But to be won in the red suits. unless the lead could be given to East to cash his diamond winner, South would manage to draw trumps, and discard diamonds on dummy's spades.
It was equally clear that East could not gain the lead in either black suit; and that West could not, while South would not, lead diamonds. Hence East's, only possible entry was in the trump suit. With this analysis, West discarded instead of ruffing.
Now East could not be present- ed from winning a trick with the heart Queen in time to cash a second diamond trick. But note that West loses the defence if he ruffs the diamond King. South, knows the game, is lost if East can, get in, so is forced to play West for the Ace of trumps; and that: prevents East from getting the lead, and the defence is held to the two red Aces and, a low trump.
