For the most part, trains were running from the outer suburbs of points within reach of the cen tre of London, the from these, workers had to devise their own means of transport.

The majority walked, and those who remembered byways" which were discovered during the general stake fourteen years ago reaped the advantage, for they were able to get away from traffic hold-ups and keep clear of the busler routes. Some hired taxis, but as the de- mand far exceeded the supply parties were often formed of those: going to a certain area, and the

OFF THE RECORD

REFUGEES DON'T MIND THE RAIDS

French, Belgian and Dutch refugees in London are not as a rule much alarmed by the air raids.

These, they say, are nothing to what they have endured in their own countries. Not because the scale of the raids is not consider- able, but because our defence is 50 powerful.

In their own countries the Nazis did as they pleased because there was no effective defence. There they watched with utter helpless- ness the spectacle of the German dive bombers bombing and ma- chine-gunning terrorised crowds. Confidence in Barrage

"It is so different in London,” they say. By day. most of the raiders are kept away; those which do reach the capital have to keep height and clear off at full speed from our fighters.

:

By night the terrific barrage gives the refugees the confidence they never knew at home. To that confidence is added the resolution of Londoners and the development of shelter protection already far surpassing anything these exiles had in their home- lands.
