ITALIAN 'PLANES SHOT. DOWN

Further R.A.E. suc- cesses over Albania were announced in Cairo yes- terday.

Reports received confirm that in addition to two aircraft destroyed by R.A.F. fighters and bombers formations in Albania on Monday, two other enemy aircraft were also destroyed.

Vital Factor In Result Of War

IF GERMANY RUNS short of oil she must stop fighting. It is with this belief uppermost in mind that the R.A.F. shapes its operations. And the R.A.F. know a trick worth two of bombing oil wells.

What this trick is was explained, among other things, by the Minister of Economic Warfare, Mr. Hugh Dalton, at a press con- ference in London yesterday.

The British blockade, said Mr. Dalton, is working well and the enemy is growing un- comfortably short of certain commodities.

Oil, rubber and copper looted | by Germany from occupied terri- tories is now exhausted and Ger- many is back where she was six months ago.

The safety margin of oil in been Germany has not yet touched but she is using more oil than she is producing as a result of R.A.F. attacks on sup plies, storage and the transport system, and disappointing sup- plies are obtained from Russia. Mr. Dalton said he recommend ed targets in Germany to the Air Ministry and always kept oil near the head of the list.

Italian Target No. 1 In Italy Bari had always been In Italian East Africa, Kas- the RA.F.'s number one target, sala was heavily bombed. said that as crude.oll was not "very Inflammable, it was non- sense to suggest bombing the Rumanian all wells.

Rather wait until Germany had spent labour and time refining and transporting it, and then bomb it.

Italy First

Italy would feel the pinch even, before Germany, said Mr. Dalton. because she had no synthetic oil plant and there was little doubt her supplies were growing short and she had to get replenishment from Germany.

Mr. Dalton would like to see in- creasing mobilisation of the re- serves of United States produc- tion set aside for Britain and the Allies, and added: "There has been an exchange of views with the United States on the matter." -Reuter

U.S. AIRCRAFT

AROUSE R.A.F. ENTHUSIASM

An-American-built air- craft took the photographs of damaged Italian war ships at Taranto.

"This was officially disclosed last night in a story which stated that 'the RAF, are enthusiastic about the performance of United States aircraft they are now using.'.

These have fought their way successfully through many operations, particularly in the Middle East.

It is stated the RA.F‚‚havë | come to regard with real affection the Lockheed Hudsons, which are proving such a valuable aid to Britain's Coastal Command, and have taken part in hundreds of bombing raids from Norway to the Bay of Biscay. Reuter
