PUZZLES NAZIS
Reports from American correspondents in Berlin show between the lines that the Nazis are both puzzled and exasperated by the failure of the Bri-, tish to understand that they ought to give in. It is not hard to see, too, in some wishful thinking that the Germans are do- ing, a certain anxiety as well as bewilderment.
Thus one correspondent reports the Germans as saying It is highly significant. that official communi- ques are constantly reiterating that railway stations and lines. in and around London and else- where in England are being bombed.
This can only mean, they say, that London is becoming more and more a "beleaguered fortress dam, will have to choose between which, like Warsaw and Rotter-
destruction and unconditional capitulation." Daily and nightly· bombings of a city the size of London is bound, they insist, to reduce the spirit of the inhabit-. onts.
It annbys them, too, that the Royal Family stays at its post, and so they will not believe it. In the hope of disposing of this unpalatable fact they déclare that ́`· "the cheap and obviously only the slightly effective practice" of
making Britons. believe the Royal· Family is standing by in spite of be still less effective when the the rain of German bombs will British people discover that it is Uving outside London, and dashes into town for State acts and pro- paganda"purposes only when Ger- than raids are over,
