YOUNGER MEN TAKE HIGH COMMANDS IN AIR FORCE

PREPARING TO TAKE

CREATION OF A new Army Cooperation OFFENSIVE

Reports from London co-published in the American

Command of the R.A.F., announced on Sun- day, foreshadows energetic attention to two of the most pressing problems of aerial operation with the British Army,

First, close study will be given to aerial artillery observation problems and suitable aircraft for this;

Secondly, the extent to which British dive bombers can replace artillery in harassing the enemy infantry.

The new Command is essential and the new commander is the right man to probe these pro- blems. He went through Wool- wich and served with the Artil- lery, joining the old Royal Fly- ing Corps in 1914.

He went to France in January, 1940 to assume supreme command

The appointment for special duty in the United States of Air Chief Marshal. Sir Hugh Dowding, who has been chief of the Fighter Command since July, 1938, hits attracted particular attention.

It is regarded by the "New York Times" as an attempt to achieve standardisation of American and British fighter.aircraft.

FIRE PUMPS DEFENCE

The Ministry of Home Security, referring to a statement issued by the National Federation" of Iron- mongers on the supply of stirruo hand pumps for fire fighting pur- poses, says that every pump which the Department has been able to obtain has been issued, to locali services or sold to local authorities. for official uses.

Answering allegations made by the Federation, the Department 'says an attempt has been mede t ; accumulate a stock in advance of the announcement of public sales through local authorities. Pumps required for this sales scheme, it is stated, have only begun to be manufactured.

Large Orders

It is true that the cost of stir- rup-pumps has increased sub- stantially in recent months, but that has been duo: to the war situation generally, and it is not

Governmer attributable to any policy in rolation to stirrup-pumpi. themselves.

The total number of jumps available, in fact, will be largely increased, as a result of Govern- ment retion, because, the Govern- ment, by means of large orders; induced a number of manufac- turers to produce pumps who would not otherwise have done so. The fact that the pumps are being produced to: Governmeril order has made it possible for an in- eransed mupply of raw Materials to he released.

The fact that a number of pumps of unsatisfactory, work- manishin' were finding their way on to the market was, in itself, a good reason foi controlling pro- duction by means of Government contracts.
