When the First Lord of the Admiralty proclaimed that the wrecking of three Italian capital ships in the attack on Taranto had de- cisively altered the 'bal- ance of sea-power in all the oceans of the world, he was speaking without a jot of excess.

In their dashing raid, the squadron of the Fleet Air Arm responsible for the magnificent achieve- ment, gained for Britain an immense strategical success which is certain to have important repercus- sions everywhere war is in progress or where fancy may be lightly turning to thoughts of war.
