We left at about 4 p.m. and got to our destination at 4.45 p.m.. after riding through jungles, swamps, etc., etc., rather like a cene taken from Trader Horn' 'Sanders of the River!' "Yesterday we had a bit .of excitement in camp. Somebody had emptied a tankful of gasoline on to the ground,,and about ten minutes afterwards a cigarette end was thrown there by one of the soldiers passing by. Im- mediately a sheet of flame en- veloped the petrol-soaked ground. Zond threatened the tents. “As · I] was near the scene. --1; saw the "start" of the fire, and felt the terrific, hent: - When the, fire call was sounded the men came run- ning up from - all directions and commenced to fight ist 'and

At one stage the excitement ran high when it was seen that one of the army trucks was 'surrounded by flames and it was feared the tank would explode. However, by hard and quick shovelling the flames were completely put out, and though the truck was badly scorched, The tank d'd · not explode, for which we were -thankful.......
