CONDITIONS AS A recruit with the East Sur- reys in Singapore and an adventurous expedition cernly does me good to tez through the jungle at night, when the lorry in which the party were riding got lost, are described in a letter received by the parents of one of the Shanghai boys who recently left to join up. After certain probation and training in the ranks, recruits. from Shanghai will be given an opportunity to ob- tain commissions, the letter says. The letter follows:-

"It is very, very muggy at prezent, and even as I am writ- Ang I hear, thunder in the dia- tanos, co. I expect wa shall, get come rain to relieve the heat., I 'am very sunburnt, and If 1 continue as I am I shall be black In another three months.

"The day after I posted my last letter I went to the Eust Surrey's stores to draw part of my kit. The stores are located about 20 miles away, so you can imagine the long ride I had. We left at about 4 pan. and got to our destination at 4.45 p.m.. after riding through jungles. swamps, etc., etc., rather like u scene taken from Trader Horn .or 'Sanders of the River!'. On The way back it Was very dark by then--the driver, who did not know the country very well, having only just come from Shanghai. took a wrong turning. and we found ourselves deep in thick jungle. and in my imagiza- tion. I could almost hear the crocodiles-or are they alligators?

Winding Roads

"To give you an idea of the winding roads we took. 1. must mention that one mament the moon was in front of us. then it would swing round to the leit, and after dislippearing into.........a cloud, appear at our rear. "Once I am settled down-- this phrase is getting somewhat stale, isn't it?—I shall be given sa chance of a commission. Won't it be grand if I manage to get one pipl "Yesterday we had a bit of excitement in camp. Somebody had emptied a tankful of gasoline on to the ground, and about ten minutes afterwards 2 cigarette end was thrown there by onc of the soldiers passing by. Im- medintely a sheet of flame en- veloped the petrol-soaked ground, and threatened the tents. As I was near the scene, I saw the start of the fire and felt the terrific heat. When the fire call was sounded, thế mên came run- ning up from all directions and commenced to fight and pre- vent the tents, cars, etc., frem being burnt. I helped by shovell- ing sand and mud on to try to smother the flames. At one stage the excitement ran high when it was

seen that one of the army trucks was surrounded by fain's and it was feared the tank would explode. However, by hard and quick shovelling the flames were completely put out. and though the truck was badly scorched, the tank did not explode, for which we were, thankful,,-,
