RUMANIA 'QUAKE DEVASTATION
Not A Ceiling Left Intact In Whole Of Capital
Streets Impassable And Casualties
Over Two Thousand
DEVASTATION IN THE RUMANIAN EARTHQUAKE IS ON SUCH A WIDESPREAD SCALE THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE, AT PRESENT, TO PRESENT ANY CLEAR PICTURE OF THE CATAS- TROPHE, WHICH MAY EASILY RANK AS THE GREATEST OF THE CENTURY.
At dawn yesterday, the majority of the t affic in Bucharest con- sisted of ambulances taking injured persons to hospital, and kun- dreds have been killed.
Reports from town after town show that scarcely a single area in Rumania escaped the effect of the violent tremor, which, judging from the limited reports already flowing in, did more damage in five minutes than all Germany's mass raids on London.
Not a single ceiling has been left intact in the whole of the capital.

In London, Mr. Shaw, the noted
seismographist, says that the first shock put his seismograph out of
action, but he was able to get it working again.
It was one of the most severe earthquakes ever recorded, he says.Reuter.
