THE OFFICIAL GERMAN news agency says that M. Laval, the Vichy Vice-Premier, is now on his way back to Vichy from Paris fol- lowing his conversations with Hitler. He is to report to Marshal Peṭain as soon as he ar- rives in Vichy.
The news agency points out that no Ger- man statement has yet been issued to explain the nature or extent of the discussions. Havas, the French agency, is more out-spoken when it says that all Frenchmen will under- stand that the meeting concerns the future of their nation, and calls it the "most important event since the armistice.'
According to the Swiss press,

TOO EARLY F TO ASSUME VICHY'S SUBMISSION
By Reuter's Diplomatic Correspondent
The most surprising thing about the Hitler- Laval meeting is that. i should have occurred at all.
That four months after France's downfall, Germany should come to realise that there is something still to be made out of the des- pondent and defeated remnants of a great empire is a confession not of the laterit strength of France, but of the desperate need of Ger- many.
It seems unlikely that Ger- many would press France, forập. declaration of war as she would, be expected to lose more than they would again.
-The would certainly find the French army a most unreliable comrade: in arms. He would not be a willing ̧ ́partner” againof his former friends:
Humiliating Conditions
What is more likely is that ceri | tàin fresh concessions were 'dis- cussed at the "meeting, “in: ex- change for Improvement of com- munications and supplies and, less rigid: 'supervision.
་
The most likely concession would be the surrender of the rema’nder
of the French Navy and possibly French. acroplanes.
It is too early to assume, how- ever, that the Vichy Government would submit to such... humiliat ing conditions.--Reuter,
toughest hombres leave him for dead!
