WINDSOR HOUSE

VICHY POLITICS

The actions of the Vichy Government in the last week or two indicate that there is little re- maining hope that the worst fears of France's friends will not eventuate, that the spirit of de- featism is too deeply in- grained in those that could change the course of the current, and that the job-hunters remain in their heydey.

Latest moves include measures for the suppres- sion of trade unions, for the elimination of demo- cratic control in the pro- vinces, for substitution of gauleiters for elected re- presentatives, and against | the Jews.

France, in fact, runs so fast at the heels of the German conqueror, is so anxious not to offend, that Mr. Churchill had to admit the prospect of Vichy France ranged on the side of Britain's enem- ies. It seems impossible of belief, even at this day and age, yet we must see the situation clearly and realise that if our future! relations are clouded in a mist, that which shows through is not calculated to rouse any British en- thusiasm.
