Argumentative Points Crop Up In Game On Saturday
How Long Must Fielder Hold Ball For A Catch
CAN BATSMAN GAIRDNER PLAY BALL AND SHINES IN STILL BE L.B.W.? RUGBY TRIAL

CRICKET WAS PLAYED fairly extensively on Saturday and the season can now be said to be well under way, with some good matches in the offing for which to look forward
The two big games on Saturday were those at Kowloon between the senior elevens of Kowloon Cricket Club and Recreio, and the Club-I.R.C. game at Chater Road..
One or two points that arose from the former match provide interesting argument if nothing else.
a
One of them is the length of time a felder is required to hold a ball in order to catch a batsman. On Saturday Ernie Fincher ran in and held a ball from L. G. Gosano few inches
off the He then staggered for ground. ward, off balance, and his hand touched the ground with the ball underneath. The umpire adjudg ed Gosano to be out but there was some discussion in the pavi- lion afterwards as to whether Fincher had had the ball in his hand long enough.
On this point Wisdens says: "If the ball, from a stroke of the bat or the hand, but not the wrist, be held before it touch the ground, although it be hugged to the body of the catcher-caught."
In this case Fincher definitely did hold the ball, in that his hand ⚫ closed over it, so the umpire would
seem to have ruled correctly,

Other Point The other point which cropped up referred to the l.b.w. rule and is one that has been a source of worry to one of the most promin ent cricketers in K.C.C. for some seasons, On Saturday Ozorio was given out l.b.w; to a ball which he had played. Whether or not the umpire was aware of the fact that it had been played is not
known.
The contention of the cricket. er mentioned above, however, is that even if the ball is played, as long as the umpire believes the

V.R.C. INQUIRY INTO SOUTH CHINA PROTEST
By "Adrem"
THE BREAKING: of a 27 year-old-record- was: not the only sensational happening in the Annual; Harbour Race this year. Yesterday saw the cul- “ mination of another, the rejection of protest by the South China Athletic Association against alleged in- tentional obstruction by J. Marques, of V.R.C. against Miss Lee Po-luen, who finished second, to Miss Celeste Guterres, who also established a record.
Throughout the long history of the harbour race: there has never been a parallel case and it is unfor- tunate from every point of view that it should have cropped up.
