THE CHINA MAIL, OCTOBER 9, 1940.

COWARDLY EVASIONS BY THE RUMANIANS

SOME OF THE circumstances attending the new development in Rumania are a mat- ter of direct concern to Great Britain, declar- ed the London "Times" in an editorial yester- day on the entry of German troops into that country.

During the past fortnight several leading British

businessmen have been arrested and no regular judicial proceedings instituted against them; the protests of the British Minister have been met by the Rumanian For- eign Minister with cowardly evasions.

Unhappily the evidence avail- able shows that some or all were subjected to physical violence in order to extort confessions of sabotage in the oil fields,

The alleged revelations, ob- tained by this process is one of the pretexts of the Nazl action. It need hardly be said that the charges are a hollow sham.

Throughout the earlier part of the war, Rumania was bound by ties of alliance with France and Britain. Nazi tactics of sudden and provoked attacks on neutrai countries had become familiar and it would have been criminal negligence on the part of the Rumanian Government not to have made plans to prevent such an attack for the destruction uf wells and other objects of military value.

Revolting Hypocrisy "

In drawing up such plans the British and French managers of the oil Helds and engineers might well have been consulted.

VICHY STILL GETTING AT JEWS

(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL")

The status of Algerian Jews which was fixed as long ago as 1870, is now abrogated.

Previously Algerian Jews were French citizens whereas

Arabs were only French subjects not en- joying electoral franchise.

One reason why Algerian Jews enjoyed preferential treatment was the fact that they formed the ma- jority of the famous Zouave re- ziments which fought gallantly in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870.

Reuter.

The methods adopted are, un- fortunately, too like those em- ployed recently against British subjects in Japan to leave any question as to the ultimate source of their inspiration.

But it would be a grave mis- take for those who perpetrate and condone such outrages at the instigation of. Berlin to sup-. pose they are doing themselves For their country any good.

Day Of Reckoning

These things will be remem- bered on the day of reckoning. The latest. movement doesn't sem likely to produce any mark- ed effect on the situation in south-east Europe, or counteract for influence the almost undisputed control exercised by the British Fleet and once more illustrated by the recent operations in the castern, Mediterranean.-Reuter.
