MINISTRY'S LIGHT

ON STOCK MARKET SHONE ALL WEEK-END

Industrials sharply advanced on the London Stock Exchange yes- terday on continued good de- mand while Kaffirs improved after of completion of an early bout profit-taking. Gilt-edged initial- ly were dull but indications of a firmer tone appeared late in the session: Rhodesian coppers be- nefitted from buying. Wall Street was firm.-Reuter.

A LIGHT SHONE for 100 yards into the street from windows at the Ministry of Agriculture from ten o'clock one night until six o'clock the next.

"Here is a bright light in the middle of London on the whole of a week-end," said Mr. J. B. Sand- bach, K.C., the Marlborough Street magistrate.

"If there had been an air raid, might have been done." hundreds might have been killed and millions of pounds of damage

He imposed a fine of £30 on Alfred Hall, a messenger at the Ministry of Agriculture in Soho Square, for causing a light to be displayed there during a week- end.

"You had better go and get It out of the Ministry as it is a fine you cannot pay" Mr. Sand- bach told Hall.

Black-Out Broken

Police Constable Clark said that a bright light was shining from the third floor of the building from 10.5 p.m. on Saturday until 6.10 p.m, on Sunday night.

It came from a totally unscreen- ed 'bulb, shining through two rooms into Scho-Square for a dis- tance of about 100 yards,

Black-out, material had been previded, but had not been drawn scross.

Hald, a temporary messenger to the Ministry, said the fur- niture was being removed from the building and when he left all the removers had gone and all the lights were out.

From that moment, he contend- cd, his responsibility ended. Asked if the Ministry would pay his fine, he said he didn't know.

"I have asked them," he said, "and they have said 'they had no authority from the Treasury to do it."

BOYS AS WOODMEN

Boys are clamouring to work as lumberjacks on timber camps in Cumberland during the holi- day.

"We think the attractions to the Lake District have something to do with so many young men wanting to work in Cumberland," sald a Forestry Commission of- ficial. "There's a certain glamour in the lumberlack's life in pic- turesque surroundings, but un- doubtedly the patriotic motive- is also there.

Have To Rough It.

"The Forestry Commissions are accepting these offers be- cause of the shortage of un- skilled labour for the timber camps."

These young nen-many are undergraduates and public school boys-will have to rough it" in the ordinary lumberjack manner. They will work a full fifty-one- hour week at the fixed schedule. (as a labourer) of wages, which risos from 24s. Od. for persons of sixteen years to 28s. 6d. for eigh- teen years and 50s. for twenty

year's.

They must all find their own lodgings in the villages.

In some parts of Cumberland school camps are being placed this summer near to the fores- try centres to enable the boys to help.

In such cases each school is a unit bringing its own equipment and making its own arrango- ments.
