MID-HARBOUR TRANSFER FROM FERRY

The exceedingly rare, if not unprecedented, spec- tacle of the mid-hárbour transfer of a crowded ferry, resulted this morn- ing from an engine break- down aboard the "Night Star."

The "Night Star" left Kowloon at 9 a.m. and engine trouble de- veloped when she was about three minutes out. Other ferries steer- ed close in and offered assistance; but it was not until the "Night Star" had been drifting for from fifteen to twenty minutes that it was decided to transfer the pas sengers.

They were taken on board, an- other, fairly full, férry without in- cident and on to Hong Kong. It is understood that the gineer aboard the "Night Star" repaired the defect shortly after- wards.

KUNMING ALARM

(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL") Following the appearance of a single Japanese 'plane near Kun- ming at 7 a.m. yesterday, the alr raid alarm in the city was sounded an hour afterwards and 27 bombers and. pursuit aircraft were reported heading for the city from Indo-China.

The invading aircraft, how- ever, failed to reach Kunming, but emptied their bomb racks around Kaiyun.

The "all clear" was sounded at 1 p.m.
