CRASHES NO BOMBS 180 FEET
(SPECIAL' TO "CHINA MAIL")
A miraculous escape from what appeared cer- tain death was enjoyed by 13 Japanese who were rid- ing in an elevator on Osa- ka's popular Eiffel Tower in Tennoji Park yester- day.
+
The cable suddenly broke when the elevator was 180 feet above) ground. It fell straight to earth but not one of the 13 passengers suffered so much as a bad' scratch. All escaped with minar bruises and a bad case of fright. Greater sufferers than the 13 central figures in the hair-raising incident were 80 Osaka residents who had gone to the top of the tower for 'a look-sce and were marooned for four hours while the elevator was repaired. Havas.
Air Ministry re- ports received up to 6.p.m. G.M.T.' show that only a small number of aircraft, mostly operating sing- ly, crossed the coast during the day.
None of the ma- chines penetrated more.than a few miles and no bombs were dropped on land:
Lively Speculation Follows Shelling
"
(SPECIAL TO CHINA MAIL")
YESTERDAY'S CANNONADING OF THE SOUTH-EAST COAST BY HITLER'S "BIG BERTHAS” HAS GIVEN RISE TO EXCITED SPECULA- TION. BOTH THE SHELLING OF THE CONVOY AND THE BOMBARD- MENT OF THE COAST ARE REGARDED BY OBSERVERS AS "TAR- GET PRACTICE" POSSIBLY INDICATING THAT THE MUCH-HERALD- ED INVASION OF BRITAIN WILL BE ATTEMPTED SHORTLY.
From any other angle, neutral correspon- |
dents suggest, the bombardment was both a CHINESE BEGIN
fiasco and a strategic mistake.
A fiasco because neither ships nor any im-
portant objective on land was hit. A strategic blunder because the Nazis have now given away the positions of their batteries.
As these batteries are presumed to be in- tended to lay a barrage to cover a blitzkrieg invasion effort, the point of defence seems also to be strongly indicated.
