MR. JUSTICE SINGLETON means to stamp out Fifth Column activity in Britain. In two days at the Old Bailey he has passed sentences totalling 44 years' penal servitude on four men and a woman. He sentenced three men, who were charged un- der the Defence Regulations, to a total of 20 years' penal servitude. The day before he had sentenced a German woman to ten years' and another man to 14 years'.

The sentences were on: Frederick Roesch, aged 26, an' engineer, ten years;

William Saxon-Steer, aged 42, a violinist, of Childs Street, Earl's
