Lord Davis asked in the House of Lords yesterday whether it was the inten- tion of Government to re- cognise Haile Selassie as the lawful ruler of Ethio- pia and whether they proposed to give him all aid within our power to overthrow the aggressor and re-occupy his throne.

According to a Dow Jones Agency report from Washington, an aircraft production programme calling for the delivery of be- tween 1,300 and 1,500 planes a month has been outlined for the British Pur- chasing. Commission by the National De- fence Advisory Com- mission, headed by Mr. Knundsen. Reuter.

Mr.

Arthur Purvis, head of the British pur- chasing commission in New York, stated yester- day that the programme for the delivery to Bri- tain of about 1,400 planes, a month was worked out in reply to the British an- nounced desire to acquire | 3,000 planes a month.

The programme had been pre- pared by Mr. Knudsen, chair- man of the U.S. national defence advisory committee.

MINERS' RED CROSS DRIVE

QUEENS OF THEATRE

CORNISH MINERS WHO WORKED IN SOUTH AFRICA IN 1898 HAVE MADE POSSIBLE A VALUABLE CONTRIBUTION TO THE RED CROSS FUND.

A Cornish lady living in South Africa 42 years ago was given a diamond and gold tiara by her [own countrymen working in the mines there as a tribute of their appreciation and affection.

The gold came from the Johan- nesburg mines and the diamonds, each without flaw, from Kimber- ley. The miners collected £500 themselves,, designed the tiara and had it made up in Johannes- burg.

The lady has now sent it to be; sold in aid of the Red Cross Fund. She wishes it to be regarded as a gift from the miners and not her- self, and so has asked that her name not be divulged.-Reuter. ·
