HARO! HARO! HARO!
Jersey and Guernsey were islands. Off the French coast in the Eng- lish Channel, wlien be- ing surrounded by water proved a piece of land an island, these were havens of a romantic individual- ism which yet cherished a basic understanding of collective welfare. "Haro! Haro! Haro!" cried any man who believed his neighbour to be trespass- ing against him, "a l'aide, mon prince, on me fait tort." Then the tort must cease until the mat- ter could be settled in court. The Encyclopedia Britannica states that "no inhabitant of the Channel Islands would think of resisting" this in- terim injunction.
