Differentiation Treatment Alleged: Evacuation Debate
A STATEMENT on the Evacuation of| Children Scheme was made in the House of Commons yesterday afternoon by Mr. C. Att- lee, Lord Privy Seal.
IT WAS ESSENTIAL, he said, to keep our naval forces ready to meet the demands of national se- curity and this forced the Government to postpone the scheme for the evacuation of children.
There were ample ships to take the children, but it was felt that these must have naval protection to ensure security the fate of the Arandora Star showed that even a fast ship would be no guarantee of safety.
The Government, therefore, felt it must postpone the scheme until| naval protection could be given.
A Labour member asked whe-| ther children who had already gone through under private rangements had been given corts.

Great Disappointment
Mr. Attlee said: "The Govern- ment realises that the postpone- ment of their scheme is bound to cause great disappointment among parents here and also among those Dominions who have so
whole heartedly co-operated in making provision for the reception maintenance of children.
and
"1 desire to assure them we keenly appreciate their gener- osity and deeply regret the In- convenience the postponement is bound to cause.
"I hope our scheme is only temporarily suspended and tha we may yet be able to take ad- vantage of their warm-hearted hospitality."
Several questions were asked about children, who had already proceeded overseas. Mr. Attlee said these had gone in unescort- [ed vessels.
An Accusation Refuted
Attention was drawn to the number of children of responsible public men who were being taken away from the danger area, and poor children were being left be- hind.

there will be no opportunity for the children of. elementary schools?
Mr. Attlee: No, the hon. mem-,, ber is mistaken. The whole pur- pose of the Government's scheme was that we should give proper proportion of children from ele- }mentary schools. That was the object of the Government's scheme. There will be a certain number of children going in. fu- ture in convoyed vessels and some 13,000 or 4,000 of these will be going from grant-in-aid schools under various private schemes put up by the authorities and bodies like the United States and, the Dominions."-Reuter,
