The Marriage Of Annette Du Val BODYGUARD

Against her will Annette found her- self looking at Garth, meeting his steady gaze defiantly.
Just then, Robin left them to raid the cellar for another bottle of whisky. "Feel in a celebrating mood," he said. "Always were sparing with the drinks here"-a chuckle as he went from the room.
Annette averted her gaze from Garth's searching eyes. Then, swiftly, disarming she looked at him again and said slowly:
"You-hate me. Why?"
Garth felt exceedingly uncomfort- able. Now was the time for the truth, Tell her. Admit it! Get it over will, But the words stuck in his throat' and he murmured.

The loss of $20,500 during the night of Wednesday and Thursday by Chinese Annette's mind wandered on, ahead of her body. She could see the crowds woman, Mrs. Lui Mui, resid- massed at the church entrance; the ing at No. 12, Suffolk Road, press photographers Down that Kowloon Tong, had a sequel long aisle; the sunlight streaming in before Mr. E. Someone said sharply: "Garth's here. Must see you, he says
And then, almost like a sigh, he heard her whisper:
"I love you, too Garth. No,' as heit's important!" turned to speak. "Don't say anything more-ever. There can never be any thing more to be said. You couldn't smash Robin's life any more than I."
It was fantastic, unreal; like some- thing he had read in a book or play. This couldn't be life-his life, rushing onwards to destruction, to a misery that even now swept over him in tor- ment. Annette. Robin's wife! Robin!
The car stopped outside the hotel, almost as if it had found its way there alone.
Garth said heavily:
"I shall leave England immediately
"What put that idea into your after" head?"
"Yes"-swiftly and as though she "Your attitude; your eyes; your could not bear the sound of the word
voice."
"I'm sorry"-stiffly.
"You think it is just the old, old story of a little cabaret dancer marry- ing into-money,"
"Isn't it?" harshly.
She looked down at her slim, white hands for a fraction of a second, then she said with a quiet dignity:
"I inherited £50,000 from my father last year, Garth, so you see I am not entirely destitute apart from my work. Is it so surprising that, like Robin, I prefer not to be idle?" An eloquent pause. "I have not broadcast my af- fairs or the state of my bank balance. I've a foolish idea about making peo- ple like me for myself."
For a moment there was a tense silence an unbearable silence. Garth tried to frame the right words, but they failed to come. He was thankful for Robin's return, which saved him the embarrassment of replying.
The week-end was far from being a success. There was a strange atmos- phere whenever Garth and Annette were together; and although they both tried to conceal their feelings Robin said, at last:
"Look here, Garth, I don't like your attitude. I hate saying it, old man, but it's obvious to anyone that you've tried to avoid Annette; in fact you've been boorish, unpleasant. I know she's hurt by it."
Garth shifted uncomfortably, His collar felt exactly four sizes too small. What the devil did one say to that? He muttered:
"You're imagining things. Annette's a wonderful person. II admire her awfully."
Robin sighed in, relief.
"I'd like to believe that. It matters
a heck of a lot to me that you and she should be friends."
Friends! Friends! Fool, whispered his brain; you know that there can never be friendship between you, Clear out, now. Tell him you're going-tell him!
But Garth didn't do so, and when Monday morning came Robin said to him:
"Will you drive Annette back to town, old man? I must stay down here, and give father a hand with the jolly old affairs of state and Annette has an early rehearsal."
"'Course course," Garth murmured. "Pleased."
They drove for the first few miles in complete silence.
And suddenly, without warning Garth said, not taking his gaze off the road even for a fraction of a second:
"It's no use, Annette-I love you. I've got to tell you so that you'll un-

During the weeks that followed they met frequently. Between them was a friendly politeness which managed to see them through
and convince Robin that his hopes had been realised,

And she cried out to her amazed friends:
"No, no! I can't see him: I can't see him." Her voice rose shrilly. How could he come here? How could he?
But Garth was already in the room. The fussing women scuttled out in outraged indignance.
"Annette!" It was only a whisper, passionate, broken.
►
"Go away. Oh, please go away." He held towards her a sheet of
paper.
"Read it," he breathed:
And Robin had telegraphed to Garth:
"Wish you to take my place and marry Annette. Am sailing Egypt to day. Taken over your job. Quits. Who did you think you were kidding? My love to you both. Be happy. Al- ways. Robin."
