HOGAN'S LEFT HAND

Ben Hogan is a lightweight with a heavyweight punch. Hogan isn't the first goffer with a slight build who could drive the ball considerable distances down the fairway but he is competing in tougher company than his pre- decessors and making a good job of it. Not far behind Demaret in earnings for the season, Hogan 'has an excellent chance of adding to this sum before summer is over.

The Texan's left hand grip dif- fers somewhat from the orthodox grasp of most of the golfers. In- stead of gripping the club with

of more fingers, he employs palm grip. This means that it is less on top of the shaft than the other players. Whereas one is sup- posed to see two,

The undergraduates have now sus- tained their first defeat in the League but have still a good chance of being runners-up to "Sin Tao Jih Pao."

They were most unlucky to be beat- en as their second last goal, scored by Lo Doon, was disallowed on the ground that the finishing bell has been sound- ed when the ball dipped into the bas- ket. This goal would have given them the match.

At no stage in the game was there ever more than two points difference in the scores. They were leading by 22 points to 20 at the end of the first half and were still on the top of the score, though only by two points, al the tenth minute after the interval.

Chan Shu-luk, for the undergraduates,

the top scorer for the game. He netted a total of nine goals and one foul goal (19 points, for his side.

Lo Doon, usually the main scorer for the losers, was unable to reproduce his usual form last night and was only able to net four goals, including the one in the last second which was dis- allowed. He has done much better than this in his previous performances but was well "marked" by Y.M.C.A. guards in this contest,

The winners were best served by and their centre, Wong Wai-hung, their right-wing, Chan Kong-yuen, while Au Chi-kuen, the guard, was attack also very impressive in both and defence.

These three players were responsible for most of the winners' scoring; Wong made 13 points, Chan 10 and Au points, making a total of 30 points out of their 36-point score.

Bankers' Easy Win

Douglas Bunn, a 12 year-old schoolboy rider who last year brake the record for juveniles under sixteen by winning four medals for jump- ing in one season, is practising again at Farnham for forthcoming com- petitions. Here is an unusual picture showing Douglas out of the saddle as he clears a jump in fine style. (Copyright, Fox).

Yet his backswing is much wider than the average professional, the clubhead coming far below the horizontal at the top of the stroke and pointing at a slanted angle toward the turf. This wide are allows tremendous clubhead speed, further accentu- ated by uncocking the wrists just · prior to impact. This hand posi- tion allows a slapping movement of the right hand as the clubhead contacts the ball; stepping up both clubhead speed and the ball's velocity.
