U.S. DEFENCE BUDGET MAY BE DOUBLED
Washington, To-day. President Roosevelt will submit to Congress next week further rearmament propo- sals which are expected to double the present defence budget of $5,000,000,000.
The President is expected to ask au- thority to spend $4,000,000,000 of the money for the Army and will largely go to building the air force up to the President's goal of 50,000.
President Roosevelt's message is ex- pected to be delivered to Congress on Monday. Reuter.
Washington, To-day.
The Senate naval affairs committee yesterday unanimously approved the bill authorising eventual expenditure of $4,000,000,000 to build 200 combat ships for the Navy.
The Bill also removes the limit on the number of aeroplanes the Navy may acquire,
The measure will be debated in the Senate next week. - Reuter.
Washington, To-day. The Navy has ordered three aircraft- carriers and two cruisers. All war- ships for the construction of which Congress recently appropriated `funds are now ordered. Reuter.

THE WAY OF A MAN WITH A MAID
Solicitor at Tottenham: You say your husband has peculiar ways? Wife: Yes, I have never seen him look at another woman, and that is not natural in a man. ** *
Solicitor: I think you object to your next-door neighbour?
Wife: Only when she tells me
now to run my husband.
*
*
寇
Solicitor: What is your husband by occupation?
Wife: Well, he calls himself a progress chaser, but I should call him a woman chaser.
*
Solicitor: Did you leave your husband in consequence of some unpleasantness between you?
Wife: Yes, he refused to do as I wanted, and that made things very unpleasant.
*
*
*
Wife: walked straight into the kitchen and saw an empty beer bottle on the table, so of course I knew my husband had returned.
K

*
Wife: My husband tried to pre- vent me from entering the room, but when I've made up my mind to do a thing I don't stand any nonsense from him.
* Solicitor: When did you leave home?
*
Wife: Oh, I didn't leave. When- ever we quarrel I see to it that my husband suffers the discom. fort.
