GENERAL WHO SHOT 52 TIGERS

General Sir Bindon Blood, "father" of the British Army, who had served in eight campaigns and was a friend of General Gordon, died at his home, Cadogan Square, S.W. He was 97.

For 80 years he was associated with the Royal Engineers, which he joined at the age of 18.

Three weeks ago he resigned as Chief Royal Engineer, an ancient post revived in 1936 after a lapse of over 100 years.

He remained senior commandant of the corps, a post he had occupied since 1914-and so his name was retained in the monthly Army List where it had figured since 1860.

IN EIGHT CAMPAIGNS

Sir Bindon served in the Jowaki ex-

pedition of 1877-78, the Zulu War, the Afghan War, the Egyptian cam- paign, with the Chitral relief force, as major-general commanding the Mala- kand field force and the Bunder field force, and as lieutenant-general com- manding troops in the Eastern Trans- vaal in 1901. He retired from Army in 1907.

WROTE LIFE STORY AT 91

Sir Bindon saw many changes in the Army and was a great believer in modern improved conditions for sol- diers.

At 91 he wrote his life story-by hand-and completed the book in a year, relying solely on his memory.

He was 71 when the last war broke out, but was able to make himself use- ful in raising troops.

Although born in Scotland, Sir Bindon came of an old Co. Clare fami- ly. An ancestor was Colonel Blood, who stole the Crown jewels from the Tower in Charles II's reign.

The general died a few hours after the engagement of a relative, Miss Wendy Blood, had been announced.

NEW SOURCE OF POWER CLAIMED

The isolation of a new substance called U-235 a chemical twin of ur- anium, and a potential source of vast power, is announced by the Physical Review. The discovery, it is claimed may prove to be one of the greatest of modern science.

Predictions have already been made about the practical uses to which the new substance might be put if it could be isolated in pure from in compara- tively large quantities. One pound, it is asserted, would be equal in power output to 5,000,000lb of coal or 3,000,- 000lb of petrol; and five or 10lb would drive a liner or battleship without re- fuelling for a long period.

"

"But we felt that there might be some .who had gone into hiding lower down the coast. We made .our way along the shore, hailing through megaphones all the day.

"Just as dusk was falling we near- knew to be in cd Calais, which we German hands.

"We waited till night, and then two of us put off in a little dinghy and rowed silently to the harbour. On the end of the jetty we could Just make out the forms of German soldiers at a machine-gun post. "For a

boat time we steered the through the sea with our hands so that the sound of oars splashing wouldn't attract them.

NIGHTMARE JOB

"It was a nightmare job, but thank God we did it. At the end of the jetty, right under the Germans, we heard a faint whistle.

"We got in close, and there were five B.E.F. men.”

"Without a sound we got them into the boat, crept back to the trawler and got well away before dawn."

The five B.E.F. men were on the verge of collapse when they landed.

"We were left behind at Dunkirk and decided the beach was too un- healthy," one of them said. "We even- tually reached Calais.

"We were done in. We crept into a space beneath the jetty to find somewhere to sleep. Then we heard German soldiers walk overhead. "We were scared stiff lest we cough- ed."

EFFECTS ON WAR Already the implications the effect of this discovery might have on the outcome of the war have been discuss- ed, and it is asserted that German physicists, chemists and engineers have been ordered to drop all other research and devote themselves to this aspect alone...

BRITISH EXPERT'S VIEW

A London authority said that Ameri- can claims concerning U-285 might well be true. The quantity available, however, was not likely to be one pound but perhaps a millionth of that In his view, therefore, the amount. discovery was unlikely to provide a secret weapon for either side in the
