AN AIR MINISTRY communique says that large- scale operations were carried out by the R.A.F. yesterday. The objectives included Lunen, Hamm, Bielfeld, Munster, Duren, Schwerte, Euskirchen, Mun- chen, Gladbach, Hamborn, Emmerich, Ham- burg, Brunsbuttel and Nordeney.
One of our aircraft failed to return. Other operations were directed against military storehouses at Ijmui- den, Scheveningen and the aerodrome at Borkum.

One of the three main hangars and aircraft standing nearby were set alight in the first sortie which was quickly followed by a still heavier attack in which twelve air- craft on the ground were destroy- ed by high explosive bombs. Many others were .damaged.

LYONS, WHICH WAS entered early yesterday by the vanguard of the German forces driving down the Rhone Valley, remains calm under the oc- cupation, with deserted streets and policemen on their beats as usual though unarmed. M. Emile Bollcart, Prefect of the Rhone Depart- ment, remained at his post, as did the Civil Ser- vants and Cardinal Gerlier, Archbishop of Lyons.. The Germans immediately posted guards on all
