New York, To-day. Joe Louis retained the world heavyweight title before 30,000 at:

the

Yankee Stadium last night. 'when he beat Arturo Godoy, of Chile, on a technical knock-out in the eighth of a scheduled 15- round bout. Godoy forced the fight for the first five rounds, frequently sending Louis to the ropes with body punches, but a cut over the left eye in the first round handicapped him in the later rounds. Godoy was floored for a count of six in the seventh round and for counts of six and five in the eighth round before the referee stopped the fight.-Reuter,

London, To-day. Commenting on the air raids over Britain the "Daily Herald" says so far little damage has been done but the assaults have been small in scale. We must be ready as the campaign, develops for real mass raids.

Several papers comment on the efficacy of the Anderson shelters. The "Daily Mail" says their ability to stand up to blast and splinters has been amply proved. In some cases bombs dropping only a few yards from a shelter have left the occupants unharmed.-Reuter.

London, To-day. In a leader entitled "The German Dream,"

," "The Times" this morning says the inspired publicists of the Nazi and Fascist press have been canvass- ing prospects of a new European or der in which the Imperial obsessions of Rome combine with the megalom- ania of Berlin. Pointing out that Ger- many and Italy already possess formidable conglomeration of terri- tories, the paper says that exploita- tion of these assets by the invaders involves an immense task in adminis- tration. The Gestapo, instrument, of revenge and terror, is not a perman- ent system of government. A heavy hand and ruthless suppression are not weapons by which proud and highly civilised nations can be organised and governed. The first sign of military reverses or widespread economic dis- tress, which the occupation is doomed to. create, would reveal the hollowness of Germany's control. Some 75,000,- 000 Germans, even assuming they are solid in loyalty to the Nazi cause, can- not permanently hold down 90,000,000 people united in hatred of the German yoke. A German-run and German- ridden Europe is not merely a night- mare, it is a tour de force which Ger many cannot maintain. Economically the vision is still more unreal." The problem of organising Europe, as self-contained economic unit under German control, in defiance of the [rest of the world, remains' inaoluble. Continental Europe is not and never has been self-supporting Aveven the transport system of the Continent is dependent on sea power. So long as sea power is denied the controller of the Continent, the lesson of Napo leon's Continental. Blockade 1. still doubly valid. It is well understood that Hitler's domination, even if es- tablished, would lack every esser element of stabilityr Hitler. stop.there The conquest of involves not mly, the conquest i tain but of the world"-Reuter-

Istanbul, To-day. Turkey is hastily putting the finishing touches to her state of military preparedness, and new measures are being taken as a precaution against repercussions in south-east Europe of the de- velopments in France. The mili- tary authorities in the Istanbul area are reported to have called up individually several classes of reservists of all ranks, and have also requisitioned a large number of lorries and other motorised vehicles which, it is stated, intended for East Thrace.-Reuter.
