SAPPERS ALMOST EARN FIRST LEAGUE POINTS Details Of Brewers' Protest Against Chung Hwa
LEUNG AND CHUNG PLAY VERY WELL
(By “Grandstand”)
BASEBALL FANS who packed the grandstand and lined tr sidelines 10 deep last Saturday, at Caroline Hill, - were treated to a real ball game which was full of thrills and .explosive moments, including a fist fight, a free-for-all garnished with plenty of arguments and squawks. This all happened when Chung Hwa nosed out Hong Kong Brewery, 5-4.

The pitch, however, was a strike and Arculli struck out to retire the inning .... Did the run count? Hal Winglee and the Bambino argued with the Ump till their faces were blue but "Highpockets" Wilson stuck to his guns and informed the scorer that the run did not count.
UNDER PROTEST
H. B. pushed across one more run in the third on a hit by George Souza and a bobble by Wally Ching. In the same inning Chung Hwa added one more tally. Hank Chang singled and was brought in by Chay, who sacrificed to the pitcher.

In the eventful sixth the Brewers garnered two more runs in a desperate rally. George Souza was walked and H. Ali slashed a single to right field. Stan Leonard grounded to third base All and Souza scored on the play. scored on a wild throw by Tuffy Chinn to first base and Dave Leonard round- ed second. Joe Bowen, who substituted for Zinho Gosano, grounded to second- basemen Choy for the second out to advance Dave Leonard to third. The rest of the frame which caused hard feelings, a protest and etc. has already been described.

Two dazzling double-killings were dished out in this fracas: Wally Ching to Grandpop Leung then to Tuffy Chinn to nall Terry Leonard and Obear Arculli in the fourth and, in the same inning, Madeen Arculli to his brother. Obear then to George Souza to get rid of Richard Chung and Al Lau.

A big hand to oldtimer Grandpop Leung for his brilliant performance at the initial sack where he took 12 chanced with nary a miscue. Some praise must also be given to Richard Chung for the manner in which he guarded the left pastures. The way he caught that foul ball off Terry Leo- nard's bat was something to behold. It's interesting to note that the H.B. sluggers, who are reputed to be bet- ter hitters than the Chung Hwa ball bruisers, only nicked Bill Chang for three measly hits, while the Abemen hammered Arculli for nine blows.

Sunday's Games
3
In the first game of a double-header on Sunday Hong Kong Baseball Club narrowly defeated Royal Engineers 6-5. The Molthenmen, who took the game very easily, were given a scare by the Sappers who were all out to give the Hongkongites a hiding and almost succeeded.
"Smudge" Smith started on the mound for Ball Club, and struck out one and walked seven. Johnny Alvares took over the assignment in the fourth and fanned three, walking three. Smith allowed three hits and Alvares one Flash
Long distance hoist of the fray was a homer by Fox and one two-bagger each for Doc Molthen and Gillespie.

Let's get on with the game, the fist come later. fight and free-for-all The Brewers, who batted first, started'] off with one tally in the first stanza. George Souza was passed to first and stole second on the next pitch. H. Ali sacrificed a bunt to the pitcher to ad- ⚫vance Souza to third. lead-off. Terry Leonard's attempted tag-out shoved Chang's foot off the cushion and for some reason best known to base umpire Dave 'Walker he called the runner out.
DECISION FINAL
More arguments arose but Dave had given his decision which was final. Nip Lum singled to centre field and dashed to the initial station in no un- certain way.
No less than four double plays were pulled in the encounter. Fettinghoff to Dutch Lenginbrink in the first to nail Taylor and Shaw." In the same inning the Sappers completed a double kill- ing. Taylor to Denyer to Ings then to Fox to dispose of Joe Higgins and Charlie Figueiredo: In the third Molthen to Smith to catch Shaw and Ratcliffe napping. In the fourth Fox to Welford to get rid of Johnny Alvares and Tony Alves.
