-Vernon Bartlett
London, To-day.
Vernon Bartlett, M.P., in a broadcast address last night, said:-
Germany
"At whatever the cost, can and will be defeated. There is no suggestion of surrender.
"We have faced the continent of Europe alone before and have been victorious. On this occasion, we will not lose. Britain can and will save itself and Europe."
In overrunning France, Hitler had used up vast quantities of precious tanks and aeroplanes and oil reserves, and the German people had suffered enormous casualties, so much so that the greatest efforts were being made in Germany to keep the figures secret. Every country Hitler had conquer- ed has lost its trade and prosperity. Those countries, as well as Ger- many, may be faced this winter with a famine such as Europe has not known for many generations. "After consultation with Mussolini,. Hitler must state his terms. The
Norwegians were no longer allowed to move about freely in the occupied territories. They were threat- ened with reprisals,
Looting became more systematic and more detailed.
Above all, the economic life of the country was destroyed. Towns and farms have been bombed to bits or wiped out by fire.
In- Unemployment is tremendous. land and coastal communications have hot got going.
So far, Norway is a dead loss to the Nazis. They have to go on fighting for the country.

The occupation, in fact, is costing. them as much trouble and expense as the original invasion.
After all, the Norweglans still have their own Government in existence. within their own frontiers, even if it has had to retreat to the far north.

Washington, To-day. With the approval of the Adminis- tration a bill was introduced yester- day before the naval committees of the Senate and House, providing for the construction of 84'additional wa ships, namely three aircraft-carriers, 12 cruisers, 41 destroyers and 28 submarines at a cost of $1,200,000,000,| The Nazis have, so far, been unable representing a 22 per cent, increase in to prevent that. the Fleet's present authorised strength in addition to the 11 per cent. ex- pansion just approved by President Roosevelt when he yesterday signed the two Naval Expansion bills. - Reuter.
The Norwegians,' therefore, continue to present a firm front, at least in the spirit.
The first favourable circumstances will show that the front can be re- established in action.
