ALMOST UNNOTICED AMONG THE HISTORIC EVENTS NOW OCCURRING IN WESTERN EUROPE, IMPORTANT POLITICAL EVENTS ARE TAKING PLACE IN THE BALTIC AREA. Lithuania practically lost her independence when she allowed Russian troops to cross the border and occupy all her important cities, and Eston- ia is following suit.
An impressive display of the might of
the Red Army was staged in Kaunas, the capital, as 200 tanks rumbled through the streets and took up positions before Government building.
The Lithuanian Government was in a state of complete disorganisa- tion as, not content with demanding the resignation of a few Ministers, Moscow announced the Kremlin In- tended to take an active part in the formation of the new government and would admit only a Popular Front government "which alone is able to carry out with full respon. sibility the terms of the Lithuanian- Russian non-aggression pact which was violated by the former Gov-
ernment."
Lithuania remains calm.
