MASS MEETING IN DUBLIN FOR NATIONAL UNITY

Dublin, To-day.

THE LARGEST MEETING DUBLIN has known for years was held on College Green yesterday and demonstrated determination to defend with all the resources of the state Eire's policy of neutrality.

All three leaders of parties in the Dail Mr. de Valera, Mr. Cosgrave and Mr. Griffiths addressed the meet- ing, stressing that differences were buried and they now stood as one party for Irish freedom.

LITHUANIAN PRESIDENT

GOES ABROAD

Kaunas, To-day. President Soetona has left Lithuania for abroad and he is regarded as resigned.

Premier Merkys, who tendered his resignation following the Russian ultimatum, is carrying out the Presi- dent's duties.

The Lithuanian Government issu- ed a declaration that the increase in Soviet garrisons was necessary in order to strengthen` security in eastern Europe owing to the Inter- national situation and war develop- ments.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Lithuanian Army issued an order describing Soviet troops as a friendly army-Reuter.

German Report

London, To-day. The German radio quotes a Kaunas telegram as saying that Merkys, Acting Premier of Lithuania, urged Lithuanian people in a broadcast judge the situation rightly.

He is reported to have said:

Mr. de Valera said the country was in imminent danger but the military was mobilised and recruits were join- ing the army in great numbers.

Mr. de Valera added there was no use talking of liberty if liberty was being taken from them.

Coming Nearer

Mr. de Valera said that the danger was coming nearer, as the hours pass- ed. They must be prepared for action and stand together ready to obey the -orders of authority.

The soldiers were already mobilised and at their posts. There had been a great response to the call for re- cruits and ex-servicemen in great

numbers had come forward.

Mr. Cosgrave, said that the Irish people had reached a complete unity never known before and their courage and patriotism would not fall them now.

The Speaker of the Dail, who presided, said that in the past two weeks 50,000 men had come forward for the different services.-Reuter. *:

"We must therefore look upon these troops in our land as a friendly allied army.".

He added the most important thing at the moment was the preservation of peace and order.-Reuter.

CHUNGKING BOMBED

Chungking, To-day. Over 100 Japanese 'planes raided Chungking after four days' respite from daily raids which started on May 26.

Chinese fighters attacked the raid- ers and are believed to have shot down several.

The Japanese mostly used incen- diary bombs causing fires in crowded districts to burn fiercely-Reuter.
