BEF'S MIRACLE OF DELIVERANCE
London, To-day.
“THE MIRACLE OF DELIVERANCE," as the Prime Minis- ter described the embarkation through Dunkirk of a third of a million men, the capture of which the Ger- man High Command had already claimed, is the theme of much comment in weekly journals and consideration is given to its lessons from many angles.
"Time and Tide," among other reflections, prints the fol-
lowing under the heading "The British soldier." "One of the main causes of the Bri-3000 English, Welsh, Irish and Scots tish achievement in Flanders was held at bay six times their number and the superiority as fighters of our in- often with nothing but the bayonet. fantry, our gunners and our mechanis- ed men. Whatever else the battle has done it has once again vindicated profes- sionally the British private soldier, non-commissioned officer and battalion officer, British Wireless.
DE VALERA'S APPEAL FOR VOLUNTEERS
Dublin, To-day.
An appeal to 'the people to jin the defence forces of the country imme- diately was made by Mr. Eamonn de Valera, the Premler, in a speech at Ennis, County Clare, yesterday.
Pointing out the danger of invasion he said: "We are anxious to avoid the ravages of war, and therefore we must ensure that it will be very cost- only for any Invader to come here.”
Reuter.
"The defence of Calais achieved its end historically but its immediate im- portance is the impression made ordinary men by the knowledge that
