Alleged Italo-Japanese Plan For Shanghai

To Seize The Settlement

And Concession

THE CHINESE PRESS GIVES prominence to a report of alleged Japanese plans to seize the International Settle- ment and French Concession in Shanghai in the event of Italy's entry into the European war.

GOVERNMENT AND AIR RAID DAMAGE

LONDON, TO-DAY.

The alleged plans are said to com- prise the following points:-

Firstly, the Wang Ching-wei gov- ernment is establishing a committee consisting of Hsu Liang (Vice-Minis- ter for Foreign Affairs), Wang Hang- chang (Vice-Minister for. Justice) and Slao-en (Mayor of the Municipality.of Greater Shanghai) for the purpose of taking over the two special district courts, the police and public utilities.

Secondly, the pro-Wang Ching-wei press is agitating for the retrocession of the Concessions and is launching a campaign against France and Bri- tain.

ROAD CHASE

Mrs. R. O. Hall, wife of the Rt. Rev. Hall, Bishop of Hong Kong, with a few friends pursued a thief and re- covered a hand-bag which the man had stolen from her car last night near St. Andrew's Church.

Coming out of the Church Hall at 7 p.m., Mrs. Hall saw a Chinese get into her car which was parked out- side, take the handbag and run to- wards Austin Road. She raised an alarm and with a few friends pursued the thief.

The man, turning into Austin Road, threw the bag away. It was recovered with none of the contents missing.

AMBASSADORS URGE AMERICA TO ACTION

Washington, To-day. The American Ambassadors in Lon- don and Paris are "telephoning and cabling us to do everything to ac- celerate the production of military es- sentials, one of President Roosevelt's secretaries stated yesterday.

The secretary was replying queries about reports that the two Am- bassadors had sent requests to Wash- #ington that planes and military equlp- ment to the Allies should be rushed.

Fourthly, plans have also been made to prevent foodstuffs from en- tering the Settlement and Concession. Disturbances will be organised in the foreign areas, after which :: Japanese troops and puppet police will enter the areas for the alleged purpose of maintaining peace and order.

He said 15,000 Japanese crossed the river east of Shasi, while 30,000 zrak were crossing.

The Colonial Secretary. has tele- graphed to the Governor of Bermuda saying that the generous offer of the Legislature is gratefully accepted and he asks the Governor to convey to the an expression of his Legislature high appreciation.
