"There are at present over 20,000 families of ordinary Japanese settlers in Manchukuo," he declared.

"During the current year we plan to send 20,00 more families there, and despite the increased demand for labour at home it will be neces- sary to redouble our efforts to en- courage settlement in Manchukuo.".

INCIDENT AT LAICHIKOK BEACH

Alleged to have behaved in a dis- orderly manner whilst under influence of drink at Laichikok Beach on Satur- day afternoon, Knut Rils, 22, residing at No. 4B, Hankow Road, was placed on a $20 bond to be of good behaviour. for six months by Mr. Q. A. A. Mac- fadyen this morning.

Inspector Nolloth, prosecuting, al- leged that Riis used abusive, language to people at the Beach, to have entered a car without the owner's invitation and to have refused to get out of the car when requested.

10-FEET FALL: BADLY INJURED

Before Mr. Q. A. A. Macfadyen this morning Chung Yau-sing, 61, was charged with cruelty to a cat.

A street sleeper without food, Chung was seen putting a live cat into a bowl of hot water on a piece of vacant ground in Soy Street on Satur- day afternoon.

Sentencing Chung to ten days' hard labour, Mr. Macfadyen remarked that his poverty could be excused, but not his cruelty.

KNIFE ATTACK

An alleged attack on a school girl with a knife on Saturday morning in Peace Avenue had a sequel this morn- ing before Mr. E. Himsworth, when Chan Cheung, 22, was charged with assault with intent to rob Miss May Chow, a student of Pooi To Girls' School, and with wounding her.

At the request of Det.-Sgt. N. B. Fraser, the case was adjourned.
