PREPARATION FOR EVEN WORSE NEWS SUGGESTED BY MR. HAROLD NICHOLSON

LONDON, TO-DAY.
A WARNING TO EXPECT EVEN WORSE NEWS IN DAYS TO COME WAS GIVEN BY MR. HAROLD NICHOLSON, PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY TO THE MINISTRY OF INFORMATION, IN AN EMPIRE BROADCAST LAST NIGHT.
London, To-day. Major-General Sir Alfred Mr. Knox inquired in the Com- mons yesterday whether the Government had received a report on the trade boycott against British goods carried on in Shantung, particularly in Tsinan and Tsingtao.
Mr. R. A. Butler, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, replied in the af- firmative, and added a report had been received confirming the existence of a committee for the enforcement of anti-British activities at Tsinan,
Nicholson also said that by employing methods which did not exist in previous wars the Germans might be able to land in Britain some thousands of troops, but a virile, unbend- ing race of 45,000,000 people would not let them remain on their shores for long.

AN OPEN MIND ON DEFECTION OF LEOPOLD
"We must face the fact," he declared, "that the Ger- mans may be able to reach a decision in Flanders but it won't be a final decision,
"The great armies of France are now massing on a defensive fine to the south of the main battle area the and are prepared to deny to Germans that complete victory for which they had hoped.
"We know we shall be exposed to heavy-bombardment from the air and we are not, so foolish as to neg- lect our precautions against a possible invasion.
Navy's Power
"Yet even the perfected organisa- tion of the German land and air ar- the fact that the British Navy exists and is
mies cannot detract from London, To-day.
NOW THAT THERE HAS BEEN time to reflect on King Leopold's decision there is more of a ten- dency to keep an open mind.
In Britain, there has been the advice of Mr. Chur- chill, Mr. Duff-Cooper and Admiral Roger Keyes to reserve judgment.
In the United States, the press comments on the struggle which must have taken place in King Leopold's mind before reaching his decision and recalls that he and the Belgian Army fought nobly for 18 days without respite.
The most noticeable effect has been the bracing of the Allied determina- tion to fight on.
The British Ambasador to the United States perhaps best summed it up when he said:
"There is no use deriying that the fighting has gone worse. But we are going on, tails up!"
FRENCH DISMAY
In France, where dismay was na- turally greatest, it is pointed out that but for Allied fidelity we would have had in France ready means of stopping the enemy,
Writing In "Populaire," M, Blum says that but for our fidelity we should still have in our lines the British and French divisions who are still fighting on Belgian soll. King Leopold does not speak for his people, M. Blum goes on, and this will be shown when the Belgian Parliament meets next Friday when it is expected to endorse the Belgian Government's decision to fight on-Reuter.
