PARIS, TO-DAY. - A GENERAL STAFF COMMUNIQUE SAYS VIOLENT FIGHTING IS GOING ON IN THE SOMME RE- GION, WHERE WE CONTINUE TO PROGRESS, AND ON THE NORTHERN FRONT.
The enemy who during the last few days accumu- lated considerable material in the Boulogne re- gion, succeeded in seizing the town after three days of fierce fighting in and around the city. Our artillery is inflicting very heavy losses on the
enemy between the Aisne and Meuse.

This morning's newspapers emphasise that the nomina- tion of General Ironside to the post of Commander-in- Chief of home defence indi- cates the considerable im- portance the British Govern- ment attaches to home de fence.

A German attempt to attack Britain from the north may be imminent, says the Stockholm cor- respondent of the “Neue Zuercher Zeitung.” The correspondent says Ger- man concentrations are taking place in central and southern Norway, notably at Stavanger and Bergen. German freighters have been ar- riving in ballast at these ports and may eventually be used as transports. Havas.
