HOLLAND REVEALED QUEEN'S & ALHAMBRA

London, To-day.

DETAILS HAVE NOW BEEN released of the work

performed by the Royal Navy in its usual inimit able style since the Nazis invaded the Low Countries.

The Navy had three tasks

to help évacuees, to lay mines and to help, when possible, British troops on shore.

Ships were sent immediately the German invasion began and faced a terrific air bombardment, many gun crews firing from dawn to dusk at the Nazi aircraft. Some of them landed British soldiers and Royal Marines to help the Dutch authorities deal with parachute troops and "Fifth Columnists.”

The Germans had been laying magnetic, mines at the entrances to all ports and British minesweepers were sent for to clear the channels. Minelayers, too, left within two hours of getting the order to proceed to Holland, and completed their task within five minutes of schedule.

British warships took off the Dutch Royal Family, and a de- stroyer which was taking Princess Juliana had a narrow escape. A magnetic mine was dropped into the sea only 40 yards ahead. #t blew up with a terrific explosion, but the ship was not damaged. A naval officer found Queen Wil helmina standing calmly on a Jetty. He asked her if he could be of any assistance. She replied that she would like to go to Flushing and did he know the way? Within 10 minutes, she was walking on board à British destroyer on the way to Flushing and then England.

Another naval officer saw refugees bombed and machine-gunned by Nazi 'planes as they tried to reach the ships.

One of the refugees, a Dutch dia- mond merchant, volunteered to go to Amsterdam to collect millions of pounds worth of diamonds.

Many securities were "farrled" over by a destroyer. They were collected by a British officer sent to the capital for that purpose.

The Zuider Zee

When German troops broke across the Zuider Zee, British motor tor- pedo-boats were sent on a journey across the North Sea and through canals to the Zuider Zee.

This was probably the first time that British warships had ever been in that area.

When the British naval forces withdrew, some of the officers- helped the Dutch authorities. In demolition work, while other mon went to Rotterdam to set on fire the oil supplies. The flames from the fires could be seen 50 miles out to sea.

Commenting on his experience, one British officer said that he seemed to be surrounded by spies and para-
