GREETINGS OF EMPIRE PREMIERS

London, To-day. The Premier, Mr. Winston Churchill, has exchanged messages with Mr. R. G. Men- zies (Australian Premier), Mr. Mackenzie King (Cana- dian Premier), Mr.. Peter Fraser, (New Zealand Pre- mier) and General Smuts (South African Premier) on his assumption of the office of Prime Minister.

The message to the first. three sent greetings, and referred to the unity of the British Commonwealth against tyranny and barbarism and the waging of the war to an end.

The Dominions Premiers replied as- suring Mr. Churchill of their fullest co-operation.

The message to General Smuts was addressed to "My friend of so many years and faithful comrade of the last war," and said:

"It is a comfort for me to feel we shall be together in this hard and long trek for I know you and the Government and ́ ́people of the Union will not weary."

General Smuts in reply said he was deeply moved and assured Mr. Chur- chill of his whole-hearted co-opera- tion.

Mr. Churchill has also exchanged | greetings with Mr. Eamonn de Valera, Premier of Eire.-Reuter.

de Valera Reciprocates

London, To-day.

Mr. Churchill, in his message to the Prime Minister of Eire, said "I look forward with confidence to continued friendship between our two countries and you may rely upon me to do my utmost to ensure this." Mr. de Valera replied cordially reciprocating message,--British Wireless.

AGRICULTURE GRANT EXTENDED

London, To-day. First announcement of the new

Agriculture Minister, Mr. R. S. Hudson,

is an extension of the Government grant to farmers towards ploughing up grassland to March next year. for the 1941 harvest. The period for such grants for 1940 harvest ended on Wednesday.-British Wireless.

£39,000,000 WAS 10.5 WHICH AT PER CENT HIGHER THAN THE MONTH BEFORE.

The group showing the largest in- crease. was vehicles, and exports of all descriptions of textiles were much higher. For cotton goods they were the highest in value since October, 1997, and for woollen goods and other textiles the highest for ten years. Ex-

ports of pottery glass were also the higliest for ten years and those of cut- lery, hardware, electrical goods and. for 20 chemical drugs the highest years.

For the first four months of 1940 imports totalled £417,501,000 against £288,270,000' in the corresponding period of 1939 and re-exports £14,- 130,000 against £18,845,000-British Wireless.
