IN ACCORDANCE WITH INSTRUCTIONS RECEIV- ED FROM THE HOME OFFICES OF THE DUTCH BANKS IN SHANGHAI, THE NETHERLANDSCH INDISCHE HANDELSBANK AND THE NETHER- LANDS TRADING SOCIETY ARE NO LONGER PAYING OUT MONEY TO ENEMY ALIENS. On Saturday morning Germans rushed to both banks to withdraw money and received every- thing they asked for, since no instructions to the contrary had been received.

The latter arrived during the noon hour on Mon- day, however, and since that time enemy ac- counts have been frozen.

It must be pointed out that since the outbreak of war Germans have kept accounts with Dutch and Belgian banks since they felt neutral banks were safe.

Large quantities of goods belong. ing to German firms were also kept with these banks and these, too, have been frozen, according to en- quiries I have made.

The Banque Belge pour l'Etranger, the only Belgian bank in Shanghai,

has continued

to pay

out accounts since no instructions have been re- ceived from Brussels.

The Pope had just taken his place, says Reuter, when the dave, one of many which often enter the Hall of Benediction In the Vatican, fluttered through one of the great windows opening on St. Peter's-square,

It stayed above the Papal Throne throughout the Pope's address and only flew off · after the Benediction had been given.,

The honeymoon couples were. delighted at such an augury and many recalled that a white dove figures in the coat of arms of Pope Pius XII.
