SWISS COMMENT

The Berne newspaper "Der Bund" states: "It is unlikely that the Ger- mans will have a walk-over. The moment chosen indicates the Germans hoped to exploit the uncer- tain situation in Britain but it is more likely that the situation there was quickly consodolated.

It is now proved that Britain was wise not to dissipate the forces.-Reu- ter.

JUST NUTS

A man went into a telephone box at Devonport, rang up the naval authorities, said: "I am A 53," and then proceeded to dictate a message in code.

The officials at the barracks sat up and took notice. They decoded the message and then gasped. It said:

"Nuts to Davonport. I want to rejoin the Navy."

That, at least, was part of the mes- sage; the rest of it was not revealed in the Guernsey Court when John Arthur Pendril Jones, aged forty-one, appeared on a charge in connection with the message.

Jones, who lives in Doyle-road, Guernsey, was charged with obtain- ing board and lodging by fraud, and sending a coded 'phone message know- ing that it would interfere with the duties of the authorities at Devon-

port.

He was remanded in custody for a medical examination.

"What does 'Nuts to Devonport mean?" asked the magistrate. ··

"That's code, air,” replied

Jones,

"a polite way of addressing ⠀ thaj Navy. I was in the last war, and 1- want to get back."

The fraud charge, it was stated, re- lated to Jones failing to pay his land- lady.

If any such attempts are made they are most likely during the hours of black-out.
