THE UNCERTAIN STATE of relations between the Allies and Italy, emphasised by the closing of the Mediterranean to British shipping, was taken with remarkable calm here.

The opinion is becoming more emphatic that unless Spanish sovereignty in the Balearic Islands or elsewhere is violated, Spain will remain neutral.
