Judgment Suspended Till Tuesday--Not Longer CABINET TO FACE CRITICAL TEST
LONDON, TO-DAY.
NEXT WEEK'S COMMONS DEBATE ON THE WAR IS LIKELY TO EXTEND TO TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY, REUTER'S PARLIAMENTARY CORRES- PONDENT LEARNS.
Gossip in the lobbies indicated that the Commons COMMUNIST
as a whole have agreed to suspend judgment until Tuesday and no longer.
The cheers which greeted Mr. Chamberlain's de-
ACTIVITY
claration that Norway would not be a sideshow IN REICH
were the loudest of the afternoon. In short, it is clear the House will have to be thorough- ly convinced on Tuesday that whatever steps have been taken by then are justified.
BRUSSELS VIEW OF EVENTS
Those closest to the Minis- ters believe their statements will
carry conviction al- though they do not disguise recognition of the fact that Tuesday may prove a testing time for the Cabinet.
The attitude of the Labour Op- position hitherto was reflected in' 'Mr. Attlee's statement that Labour would have liked a full discussion on the issues raised but the safety of our men must be a paramount con- elderation.
Brussels, To-day. The Brussels papers ad- mit the Germans have obtained important suc- cesses in Norway but Labour is disinclined to exploit any whereas some papers sug-political, "If the last-named gest these are decisive, from adverse news." others take a more objec- tive view..
Many papers pay tribute to the Bri- tish press for its honest realism and point out the British public supports ill-tidings better than any other.
"Nation Belge" says the German losses at sea were undoubtedly hea- vier than those of the Allies.
"Meuse" declares: It is notable that German attacks in the North Sea are becoming rare and raids on British bases exceptional. This proves that the Scandinavian effects are heavy for the Reich.
"They seem to cost 500 tons of oil daily without counting about 40 transports sunk in a short interval, constituting a serious loss of tonnage, arms; provisions and men.-Reuter.

situation, whether military, naval or arises
The Liberals; as indicated by Sir Archibald Sinclair's speech on April 30, prefer to retain a free hand.
Criticism Probable
Should next week's discussions in- vade the field of political consequen-
·ces within the Government one thing can be taken as certain from the at- titude of the House yesterday, name- ly, that the purpose of any pressure | exerted on the Premier will be for the
sole purpose of ensuring
the best possible prosecution of the war.
There may be criticism. There will be no wavering in the nation's pur- pose. Reuter.
Opposition Holds Fire
London, To-day. Both Mr. Attlee (Labour) and Sir Archibald Sinclair (Liberal) agreed in the Commons yesterday it was inad- visable to have discussions that day, and Mr. Chamberlain then announced that next Tuesday there would be a further statement and discussion on the war situation.—Reuter.

Paris, To-day.
(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL") AMSTERDAM, TO-DAY. ACCORDING TO GERMANS AR- RIVING HERE FROM THE REICH, THE NAZI AUTHORITIES ARE SHOWING GREAT ANXIETY OVER THE EXTRAORDINARY DEVELOP- MENT TAKEN SUDDENLY IN GER- MANY BY COMMUNIST PRO, PAGANDA.
German circles openly accuse So- viet agents of working in Germany;
they claim the agents practice indus-
trial espionage on a large scale and serve as intermediaries for spreading Comintern propaganda among Ger- man workers-Havas;
ITALY GETS NAZI COAL
Rome, To-day.
The Minister of Communications, Signor Venturi, writing to Mussolini, states that the efforts to meet Italy's: entire demand for foreign coal by im- ports from Germany, following Bri- tain's embargo on seaborne traffic, have. met with virtually complete success.
NOT AFRAID OF TRUTH
I
Ottawa, To-day. Commenting on Mr. Chamberlain's statement the "Ottawa Journal” re- marks the British peoples are not afraid of the truth. Mr. Chamber- lain gave them the truth and while some of it may be unpalatable there is nothing in it to cause dismay and much to give courage and con fidence. Reuter.
