Bucharest, To-day.

SPEAKING AT A DINNER attended by Rumanian economists, Dr. Carl Clodius, head of the Ger- man economic delegation, stated the German army in Norway was determined to start total war there, using "a new and terrible weapon" as soon as weather conditions improve.

The new weapon, he said, consists of planes heav- ily loaded with explosives which will attack Bri- tish ships in Norwegian waters. The pilots will be sacrificed but, Dr. Clodius claimed, "many Germans will volunteer for this mission.”

Referring to the economic war, Dr. not Clodius 'asserted Germany was worried as regards raw materials, in view of the fact her oil needs were fully covered and synthetic production was likely to yield five million tons.

Germany also produces large quan- titles of synthetic rubber, he said, while Swedish manganese was reach- ing the Reich normally.

Dealing at length with Soviet-Ru- manian relations, Dr. Clodius stated the Soviets had promised Germany to refrain from extending the war to the east and owing to the German action

any

the Russians would not take action in Bessarabia.

Rumanian As regards

oil, br. Clodius said Rumania had promised Germany to do her utmost to supply a large quantity.---Havas.

It is authoritatively announced that recent pronouncements by responsible italians have necca- sitated the British Government taking certain precautions regard- ing British shipping which would normally pass through the Medi- terranean, but it is hoped circum.. stances will permit the cancella. tion of the precautions in the near future.

BRITISH AUTHORITATIVE QUARTERS, COMMENTING ON HIT- LER'S CLAIM THAT CONTACT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED BETWEEN THE GERMAN TROOPS AT OSLO AND TRONDHEIM, ARE NOT PRE- PARED TO SAY THAT NO GERMAN TROOPS HAVE GOT THROUGH.

It is stated, however, that any force successful in eluding Allled troops must have been exceedingly small.

THE ALLEGED INCIDENT.

The Portuguese Consul-General, Mr. F. P. de V. Soares, told the "China Mail" that if the reports were true he would have been informed official- ly. He was inclined, to disbelieve the reports..

Two well-known Portuguese busi- nessmen in 'Hong Kong, who were in Macao on Sunday, told the "China Mail" that they spent most of the afternoon in the Grande Central Hotel

the place where it was alleged, a Japanese armed force appeared and "hundreds of people left their tables and rushed into the streets in panic."

The two gentlemen spent the night- in Macao and did not leave until the following morning.

Everything was normal and there was not even a rumour of any Jap- anese landing on Portuguese soil that day.

The Portuguese Consul to-day also stated that he had no knowledge of the report that the Japanese Navy is blockading Macao.

GERMAN CLAIM TO

TRONDHEIM LINK

IMPORTANT IS NOT

London, To-day. IN CONNECTION WITH THE German High Com- mand's claim yesterday afternoon that Nazi forces moving south from Trondheim have link- ed up with similar forces coming up from Oslo, London sources point out that so far this is not confirmed from any other source, and that re- ports from the Swedish border throw a somewhat different light.

In the first place, this linking of communications, if true, has not been by way of either of the main valleys between Oslo and Trondheim—the Gud- brandsdal and the Osterɗal.
