OF THE FRAUDULENT CONVER- SION OF $2,135.45, RECEIVED BY HIM ON BEHALF OF JARDINE, MATHESON AND COMPANY, LTD. BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 27, 1938 AND JANUARY 25 THIS YEAR.

The Rev. J. R. Higgs, of St. An- drew's Church, said Koo's conduct was disgraceful. He had known Koo for the past six years and he came from a respectable family, De- fendant's father had been his church servant for 35 years, and was without a stain on his character. Koo had had a good record; he bad been to 'the best school in the Colony, and was a Christian. It was a blow to Mr. Higgs when he found defendant in his present position.
Koo stole the money to help his family, continued Mr. Higgs. The family wanted, to send their children to the best schools in Hong Kong and Koo gave most of his salary to the family every month.
Mr. Higgs asked for a lenient view to be taken.
Sentence of nine months" hard labour was imposed.
Mr. P. Wynter-Blyth appeared for the prosecution, with Detective Ser- geant Brooks representing the Police.
SOLDIERS' ESCAPE
Private Nesbit, of the 1st Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, has informed the Police that while Cpl. French was driving lorry No. 5646 along Stanley Beach yesterday he lost control of the vehicle when round a bend. Eight soldiers were on the back of the lorry, but they all jumped to safety. Cpl. French was thrown out and received injuries to his head and body, while Pte. Collins received injuries to his back when jumping from the lorry.

In March, 1930, he was sentenced to the murder of a
money- death for changer. The sentence was later com- muted to life imprisonment by His Ex- cellency the Governor,
This morning at the Criminal Ses- sions, he stood in the dock to receive death-this his second sentence of time for the murder of a 'fellow-pri- soner in the Stanley Prison.
It was alleged that accused attacked Lau Chean with a dagger in Stanley Prison on February 9 and as a result of the wound, Lau died in the Queen Mary Hospital on March 9.

Summing up this morning, the Chief Justice, Sir Atholl MacGregor, ferred to a law which dated back to the reign of Queen Elizabeth.
That law, Sir Atholl said, has never been changed. If a person who has been attacked refuses to be operated on and dies, or dies while under opera- tion, it is. murder or manslaughter, according to the circumstances under which the fatal blow had been ad- ministered.
Mr. G. P. Murphy, Assistant Crown Solicitor, appeared for the prosecu- tion, and Li was defended by Mr. G. She, instructed by Mr. M. A. da Silva.
Jury were Messrs. R. P. Phillips (Foreman), M. Zak, J. C. Gardner, Tang King-man, U. Shiu-ki, Chen King-shing and Lau Chau-kwok.
Mrs. J. F. Castro, of No. 25, Hankow Road, was treated at the Kowloon Hos- pital, after she had been bitten by a dog owned by Mrs. Ho. Yu of No. 17, Beltram Road, yesterday. The dog was sent to Mataukok for observation.
Cpl. French and Pte, Collins were both treated at the Military Hospital.
