GERMAN AIR BASE AT STAVANGER DEVASTATED
Hangars And Aircraft Left Blazing Fiercely
LONDON, TO-DAY.
THRILLING ADDITIONAL DETAILS OF THE LATEST R.A.F. RAID ON STAVANGER SHOW THAT THE AERODROME WAS SUBJECTED TO INTENSIVE AIR ATTACKS FOR OVER AN HOUR, AND THAT THE BASE HAS BEEN DEVASTATED. Aircraft arriving on the scene after the raid had
begun were able to identify their target while many miles out at sea from the huge fires started in earlier attacks.
Over Stavanger a red glow suffused the sky and hangars and aircraft could be seen blazing fiercely at the southern end of the aérodrome.
Direct hits were obtained
on the runways. A heavy bomb burst close to the civil aerodrome control tower, and another started a flerce nearby.

Alded by the light of the moon, our bombers traversed the aero-
drome in successive waves, destroy ing aircraft and buildings and pit- ting the surface of the aerodrome with bomb craters.
The ground defences put up" op- position and searchlights strove vainly to hold the bombers as they approach- ed singly from different angles to launch the attack. Light anti-aircraft batteries set up a barrage over centre of the target.
the
Despite opposition from the ground defences all our aircraft returned to their bases safely.-Router.
