JAPAN AND D.E.I.
WARNING OFF BY HOLLAND
Amsterdam, To-day. Suggestions regarding for- eign help for Holland's over- seas possessions should the mother country be invaded are firmly rejected in respon- sible circles.
Should Holland be overrun, the East and West Indies would simply be part of Holland that had not been conquered, it is stated.

The Telegraaf" writes: "Should unexpected events in Europe sult in breaking the connexion with the Netherlands Indian Government, the latter is quite capable of con- tinuing to administer the Indies without help or protection. "The East Indies possess a fleet and army whose strength it would be unwise for any power to underrate." -Reuter.
United States And
Japan's Hints ·
Washington, To-day. Considerable interest has been arous- ed in official circles by the Japanese Foreign Minister's "hands off" state- ment in regard to the Dutch East Indies, but this feeling does not amount to uneasiness.
It is generally felt that Japan will think twice before running foul of the French and British in the Far East in the event of Holland becom- ing involved in war.
་
News commentators feel there la no necessity for the United States to act because Britain and France, who would be vitally affected, would be expected to take immediate steps. Any Japanese action against the Dutch Indles, however, would doubtedly rouse unpredictable reac- tions in America by crystallising the widespread feelings against Japanese imperialist ambitions in the Far East. --Reuter.
