BELGIUM TO DEFEND HERSELF

Enthusiastic cheers were accorded M. Paul Spaak, the Foreign Minister, in his speech in the Senate yester- day in which he emphasised Belgium would defend her- self if attacked.

"One condition on which we should go to war would be to save our in- dependence," he declared.

"If Belglum were dragged war she would undergo hardships more tragic than those of any other belligerent nation."

Washington, To-day. The British Ambassador, Lord Lothian, at a press con- ference following a conversa- tion he had with State De- partment officials, stated neither Britain nor Canada would move into Greenland or Iceland unless it seemed certain Germany was about to seize them.

Greenland, he said, might make a good air base for Germany but they could never maintain it. "We could give them a knockout blow there very easily."

McNamara, Australian air liaison officer in Lon- don, welcomed members of the Royal Australian Air Force when they ar- rived in London last night to rein- force the Australian squadron which arrived in England last Christmas and has since been on active service with the Coastal Command of the R.A.F.
