Nazi Airmen At Stavanger Given A Shock
SUCCESSES IN SERIES OF
AIR CLASHES
LONDON, TO-DAY. IT IS AUTHORITATIVELY STATED THAT AN R.A.F. RECONNAISSANCE PLANE FLEW OVER STA- VANGER AERODROME, IN NORWAY, SHORTLY AFTER DAWN YESTERDAY AT A HEIGHT OF ONLY 50 FEET AND COUNTED AND CLASSI- FIED EVERY ONE OF THE NUMEROUS GER- MAN AIRCRAFT PARKED THERE. The pilot had instructions to gather photographs and information and would have exceeded his orders had he jeopardised a safe return by at- tacking, though the target was tempting.
The Germans were apparently taken entirely by surprise for the pilot was able to carry out his reconnaissance uninterrupted, and he made a second flight across the aerodrome to confirm his observation.
The aircraft also flew low over the the town of Stavanger, skimming
railway rooftops of houses and the station, where there were three pas- senger trains and a baggage train.
SUDDEN AWAKENING
The pilot reported that Stavanger appeared to be asleep but the Ger- mans apparently gave the alarm soon afterwards and as he made his way back to sea once more, his aircraft was shot at by anti-aircraft guns and by a Heinkel bomber in the distance. The Heinkel, however, did not close with the British aircraft, which turned safely,
