THE ITALIAN MAN-IN-THE-STREET IS CONVINCED THAT THE PRESENT CONFLICT WILL REMAIN LIMITED TO FRANCE, BRITAIN AND GERMANY, DESPITE THE INSPIRED CAMPAIGN IN THE FASCIST PRESS URGING PUBLIC OPINION TO BE READY TO FACE ANY. EMERGENCY FOL- LOWING THE ALLIES' DECISION TO STRENG- THEN THE BLOCKADE AGAINST GERMANY, Some rumours even assert that Italy is determined. to escort Nazi merchantmen with Italian war- ships while they are sailing for the Reich, and Fascist quarters emphasize that Italy categori- cally rejects the suggestion of the Allies that the neutrals curtail their trade with the Reich.
