To house the refugees, whose num- ber reached 15,000, the French Muni- cipality built a big village of 2,000 mud and straw huts at Laosikai, near the only natural hot water spring in the Tientsin region.

Easy access to the water supply helped to maintain good hygienia conditions and no epidemic broke out despite the crowded condl. tions, The camp still houses 9,000 refugees.
