PATROL WAR FINDS A NEW TECHNIQUE

The Germans, after many months ['night. of futile attempts have captured some. British prisoners from an outpost on the Western Front.

These attacks, designed especially to obtainTM prisoners, are carried out by special storm troops dressed in leather Jackets and armed with sub-machine- guns-the gangster weapon.

First their artillery put down smoke screen, and this is followed by a box barrage of shell fire with the object of cutting out one of our posts. Next comes a clever "lift" in the

centre of the barrage, and at a given signal, troops which had crept up close to the post rush forward.

The whole plan is cleverly executed,

The opportunity of taking` British prisoners for Identification purposes seemed good, but every attempt was repulsed, and for a while the Germans gave up trying,

One of the lessons the new B.E.F. have learned is that all platoon posts must be made ready for all-round de- fence. It is not enough to put your barbed wire out in front; an enemy patrol in such a vast "no man's land" may attack even from the rear, so each post must be a self-contained fortress surrounded by wire far enough out to prevent the throwing of those heavy stick bombs which are still greatly favoured by the Germans."

The German Army, like our own, have not been wasting their time dur- ing the winter. They have. expanded and formed large numbers of freshly trained soldiers into new, divisions. These men are sent up into the Sieg- fried Line, not to hold it but, to make a sort of "Cook's tour", to gain ex- perience. They go out on patrol with other seasoned troops who have been

because of the smoke screen, to see anything, but from the sound of the bursting shells he can guess what is happening. He therefore gives the centre of that box barrage everything he knows. Not many Germans then can reach even the fringes of his bar- bed wire.

During the first week the B.E.F. held a sector of the front line there was no moon, and the blackness of the

This country, remember, does not resemble that of the last war. In some sectors the Allies are holding covering positions to a depth of several miles, while the Germans occupy zones at least five miles deep.

Of course, these are in front of the Maginot, and Siegfried Lines respec- tively. They form a huge "no man's land," with deep outpost zones (ligne de contact) on either side and lines of resistance (ligne de recueil) farther
